Health economics

Health care systems and financing

Our activities focus on drawing up surveys and analyses of:

  • structural characteristics of health care systems (organisation of the inpatient and outpatient sectors, funding, accounting and remuneration models, etc.);
  • actors in the health care sector (physicians, nurses, pharmacists, managers of health care institutions, industry, interest groups, etc.) and patterns of cooperation of these actors within the health care system;
  • medical, epidemiological and economic ratios (health expenditure quota, life expectancy, etc.) and benchmarks derived from them.

GÖG/ÖBIG has acquired expert knowhow on the health care systems of all EU members, Switzerland, a number of states in the Balkans region (Albania, Bosnia, Croatia), Middle Eastern countries (Palestine, Lebanon) as well as Canada.

In recent years the issues of continuity management and efficient use of scarce resources have become increasingly important. Apart from contributions to various areas of HTA and economic evaluation (Quality and efficiency / Health Technology AssessmentQuality and efficiency / Health Technology Assessment) our current activities primarily focus on financing across sectors and improvement of the performance of Austria’s health care system.

Our experts in the department of health economics have organised conferences, workshops and seminars for many years; for instance, in 2004 and 2007 parallel forums were organised and planned in the context of the external link European Health Forum Gastein and in 2007 the PPRI conference was held.
