Rational use of medicines in Europe (2010)

Overview of key instruments for promoting a more rational use of medicines in the 27 EU Member States

The promotion of a more rational use of medicines is high on the agenda in several European countries. Commissioned by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Health, GÖG/ÖBIG provided an overview of the key instruments of rational use of medicines in the 27 EU Member States. Additionally, interesting tools and approaches for promoting a more rational use of medicines in five selected countries (Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands) were analysed.

Key instruments for promoting a more rational use of medicines which were included in the survey were:

  • Prescription monitoring
  • INN prescribing
  • Prescription guidelines
  • Pharmaceutical budgets for doctors
  • Generic substitution
  • Information activities targeted at the general public

The full report is available in German language. An executive summary providing the findings of the overview survey and key results of the case study countries was compiled in English.
