Women and Health Care Institutions (in German, 2002)

Main theme of the first report in the series "Austrian Women impacted by poverty" is the health care behaviour of socially disadvantaged single mothers especially their acceptance of health care institutions (in German).

Results of the expertise confirm findings in other studies stating that socially disadvantaged women, especially single mothers, use fewer health care services than other women, even if the services offered are customized for their needs.

The main access barriers are - besides a lack of education - limited time budgets and economic aspects ("personal health is a sort of luxury for me"). Further reasons, especially in rural areas, are structural deficits (inadequate accessibility of services, no freedom of choice) and the respective social background (language, country of origin, role understanding).
