The structure of drug facilities in Austria – pilot project (2001)

The project was carried out in context of the activities aiming at implementation of a uniform nation-wide documentation and reporting system of drug services in Austria - with special focus on the key indicator treatment demand.

In the run of the pilot project, the Austrian drug help structures were investigated from April 2000 to March 2001. For this purpose a survey amongst 150 drug facilities was carried out. The available results show that the structure of drug facilities in Austria is characterized by a high degree of differentiation and variety. This refers specifically to the available offers and services, but is also visible as regard to target groups, degree of specialisation and structure of staff. In addition, relevant regional differences could be found for outpatient services. E.g. in some provinces a lot of small units are existing, whereas in others a few big facilities are available. As regard to in-patient treatment - like for out-patient services - a multi-professional approach and a variety of offers and programmes can be found. But in-patient treatment is rather focussed on clients with use of illicit drugs, unlike out-patient facilities which often target in addition also persons with other addiction, social or psychic problems.
