Pharmaceutical Expenditure. Cost-Containment Strategies in EU (2001)

An in-depth work of reference providing 15 country profiles with detailed, up-to-date information on health care and pharmaceutical systems - an investigation and analysis of cost-containment strategies for pharmaceuticals taken in the 1990s

The publication "Pharmaceutical Expenditure. Cost-Containment Strategies in the European Union” presents all relevant reforms and measures taken in the 1990s by the 15 EU Member States and analyses their effects with regard to containing pharmaceutical expenditure.

The information presented in the country profiles follows the same structure: a description of the organisation of the health care system and important reforms, followed by information on the pharmaceutical system with regard to registration, reimbursement, pricing, co-payment and distribution. Cost-containment measures taken in the period from 1990 to 2001 are listed chronologically for each country. Based on data of pharmaceutical expenditure and prescrip-tions, the effects of the cost-containment strategies are critically analysed and assessed.

The country profiles summarise the pharmaceutical system in form of organisational charts and provide data about ·

• the health care system (health care expenditure, number of beds, physicians, …), ·

• the pharmaceutical market (pharmacies, wholesale, manufacturers, pharmaceutical production and sales, consumption,...), and ·

• the pharmaceutical system (pharmaceuticals registered, prescription medicines, reimbursed pharmaceuticals, prescriptions, co-payment, total public and private pharmaceutical expenditure from 1990 to 1999).

Based on the comprehensive, detailed information on the pharmaceutical systems in the EU Member States, benchmarks are established by ranking and assessing key data.

• Which strategies were regularly implemented - and which effects did they have? ·

• What are the wholesale and pharmacy margins in the EU Member States? ·
