Health and Risk of Illness (in German, 2003)

The second report of the series »Austrian Women impacted by poverty« focuses the social dimen-sion of disadvantaged women's health status (in German).

Women of lower social strata are at elevated risk of chronic illness of air passages, of their bodily mobility, and of the cardio-vascular system. In addition, they are also at equally high risk of psychosomatic symptoms like headaches, sleep disturbances, depression, etc. Overall, woman in these lower social strata have a lower life expectancy than women in more elevated social strata.

The study provided data of the relationship between inequality in social standing and the health of Austrian women. Research drew from a series of proven data sources such as the Austrian health information system (ÖGIS) and the microcensus programme “Questions about Health”.
