Drug specific further education (2003)

During the last years the demand for intensified drug specific further education was increasingly stressed in Austria. Against this background, the ÖBIG - Austrian Health Institute was commissioned by the Federal Ministry of Health and Women to develop a respective plan with curricula for selected professions. Based on the health measures defined in the Narcotic Substances Act as well as the requirements in substitution treatment, the following five groups were included: physicians, psychologists, psychotherapists, public health officers and social workers.

The plan was developed in close co-operation with experts from the relevant professions. It consists of six framework curricula - one trans-occupational curriculum and five mono-professional curricula which are based on the common one - plus recommendations for implementation. Since the importance of an interdisciplinary approach is stressed in the drugs field, special focus was given to those competencies and requirements that are of relevance for all five occupational groups. In addition, the plan recommends to put the focus of implementation also on multi-professional education in order to support the exchange between the different occupations and the creation of a common understanding. The report on these project is available in German language and can be downloaded below.
