WHO Collaborating Centre

In the past two decades the Austrian Health Institute has built up expertise on how to increase access to affordable medicines. This was mainly achieved through international or European projects and networks (PPRIPPRI , PHISPHIS).

To expand this knowledge for further countries worldwide, in July 2010 WHO established the link extern WHO Collaborating Centre for Pharmaceutical Pricing and Reimbursement Policies at the Health Economics Department of the Austrian Heath Institute.

Network meetings and training sessions of representatives of P&R public authorities will be one vehicle to exchange information. A focus is given on medicines prices (price comparisons and analyses), national reports on pharmaceutical pricing and reimbursement systems, development of indicators and the establishment of a common pharmaceutical language.

With this designation, WHO recognizes the research and networking done by the Austrian Health Institute in the field of pharmaceutical policies. We have long-term experience in pharmaceutical pricing and reimbursement analysis in European countries. WHO acknowledges the Austrian expertise on pharmaceutical pricing and reimbursement systems which aim at increasing the wellbeing of the patient should be transported to other countries worldwide.

On 20 September 2010 the official launch of the WHO CC – the third WHO CC in Austria besides the Collaborating Centre for Health & Biomedical Terminology and Health Promotion in Hospitals & Health Care – was celebrated at Gesundheit Österreich / Austrian Health Institute with representatives of the World Health Organization.

The WHO Collaborating Centre organised the PPRI Conference «Balancing pharmaceutical policies between equity and cost-containment – a critical discussion and lessons learned» in Vienna on 29/30 September 2011.
