This department focuses donation and transplantation of organ, tissues and cells, in addition to blood and blood products. Our remit includes essential national and international coordination tasks and the provision and management of statutory services (e.g. maintaining the Opting-out Registry).
One of our main tasks is implementing, evaluating and advancing the programme on promoting organ and stem cell donation. These activities are aimed at providing the best possible services for Austria’s residents while ensuring high quality levels.
Themes in this area that will be important in future include the preparation of a EU Directive on organ donation and organ transplantation as well as the implementation of the Act on Tissue Safety and the resulting consequences for organ, stem cell and tissue donations.
The Transplantation Advisory Council at GÖG/ÖBIG deals with questions of organ, tissue and stem cell transplantation. Apart from administering the Transplantation Advisory Council, the core tasks include operative functions in the three coordination offices relating to organ tissue and stem cell donation and transplantation as well as tasks concerning the use of blood in Austria.
The coordination offices also perform other tasks such as collection, evaluation and analysis of data, in addition to public relations work and statutory functions such as maintaining the Opting-out Registry of persons refusing organ donation (
Opting-out Registry).
For recent developments and data on organ, tissue and stem cell donation and transplantation please consult the latest annual report (
Transplant-Jahresbericht 2010).
