The department deals with issues related to psychosocial care in the context of psychiatry, psychosomatic medicine, psychotherapy, clinical psychology and health psychology. Studies in this field are based on health policy activities such as the Austrian psychiatry reform, the regulations on psychosocial care in the Amendment to the Hospital Act and the inclusion of psychotherapy and clinical psychology diagnostics in the range of obligatory services covered by the social insurance institutions.
The main concern in this field is to assist people with psychological illnesses and psychosocial problems. First of all it has to be determined which care services this target group requires, which professional groups and qualifications are necessary to provide the respective services and how they can be made accessible for those who need them. This refers to issues of regional distribution, quantities, funding, and to low-threshold services. The corresponding studies are aimed at defining standards for psychiatric care, psychotherapy care, psychological and psychosomatic care in the field of inpatient and outpatient treatment.
Other issues are the specific situation of care services available to people with psychological illnesses and problems according to the defined standards, and how to derive recommendations for further developing psychosocial care.
