Approximately 890 000 Austrians are in danger of poverty and about a third of them are affected by poverty. Generally women are in greater danger than men. Furthermore women’s multiple responsibilities (work, children, household, care for the elderly) cause them high physical and psychological pressure and raises their risk of falling ill. Previous studies conducted by ÖBIG show that women’s social status determine the extent of which they take advantage of health services. After recognizing this the ÖBIG started initiating further projects concentrating on women’s health. By focusing on single mothers it started analysing the health services they make use of and specific illness patterns. In 2002 this project was continued emphasising the influence of social status on female health.
