From 1980 to 2006 the Pacemaker Registry was maintained by the Austrian Society of Cardiology (working group on rhythmology). Now a central Internet application is being developed, which permits the online communication of data, with plausibility checks, to the Pacemaker Registry, which has meanwhile been managed by BIQG. In this context the Pacemaker Registry will be expanded to include implantable defibrillators (ICDs) and loop recorders.
One the one hand, the Pacemaker Registry is an important pillar for the vigilance of medical devices so that when problems occur information can be provided quickly to the health care institutions concerned and the Medical Devices Vigilance Registry (Federal Office for Safety in Health Care; BASG/AGES). On the other hand, it permits analyses of the product performance and lifetime of different types of pacemaker, and in addition to aspects of quality assurance it facilitates an overview of the market and scientific assessment.
