Quality registries and outcome quality

Hip Endoprothesis Registry

The Austrian Hip Endoprothesis Registry was established as a joint project of the Medical Society of Orthopaedics and Orthopaedic Surgery and ÖBIG. Upon the initiative of the Association of Trauma Surgery, as of 1 February 2008 trauma surgery departments have also taken part in the documentation.

In this context, both associations recommend regular follow-ups so that outcomes and developments may be analysed and progress may be made with regard to choice of implants, operation methods and perioperative management.

The goal of the Hip Endoprothesis Registry is to assess the quality of treatment regarding hip endoprostheses in Austria and also to establish an early warning system for possible defects in devices used. The Registry permits nationwide uniform protocols for follow-up monitoring and generation of data on treatment outcomes and differences depending on use of implants of different manufacturers. In order to enlarge the data pool to permit an early identification of defective implants, the nationwide data of Austria will also be used for international comparisons.

After a pilot stage, the Registry now is in its rollout phase. In future, all primary implantations and exchanges of components that take place in Austrian hospitals will be documented.
