Eurotransplant

Transplantation activities in Austria are integrated in the work of the Eurotransplant International Foundation, http://www.transplant.org, a non-profit organisation with a central office in Leiden, the Netherlands. Eurotransplant coordinates organ donations in the member states (Austria, Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Slovenia) and allocates donor organs to patients, according to specific allocation criteria.

Each donor in a member state is reported to Eurotransplant and may be identified by means of an anonymous donor number (ET number). Organs donated in Austria are also documented in donor protocols, which are sent to ÖBIG Transplant.

Compared to other countries the number of organ donors is rather high in Austria, which obviously has positive effects on the transplantation rate (number of implantations) and the average waiting time for patients included in the waiting lists.
