Contract awarding for health promotion research

Contract awarding for health promotion research

The results and theories of health promotion research form the basis of practical health promotion and thus for political decision-makers who start health promotion initiatives. It contributes to the advancement of methods and instruments of health promotion, raises questions and gives answers regarding the structures and processes that influence health and disease. Health promotion research includes studying the quality and way of action of current strategies, programmes and projects as well as initiating and promoting innovation.

In accordance with its statutory tasks, FGÖ supports application-oriented research projects that advance the scientific basis and instruments of health promotion as well as primary prevention that pursues a comprehensive concept of health. As of the beginning of 2008, research projects have no longer been cofinanced by FGÖ in the context of project support but specific contracts have been awarded or invitations to tender issued and the corresponding projects have been fully funded. Before, many research projects failed to obtain the rest of funds needed. The new system will permit the implementation of a larger number of projects, which have to be oriented more closely towards the strategies and thus the work programme of FGÖ. Investments in the transfer of evidence into practice and communication of knowhow will ensure quick practical implementation.

The focal themes of the health promotion research projects are defined by the FGÖ team, the advisory council of experts and the board of FGÖ, in cooperation with external partners. For 2008 and 2009, the focus has been placed on effectiveness research and strategy development.
